How Does Hypochlorous Acid Kill Molds?
Hypochlorous acid is the key to germs and molds destruction. The key property making it lethal to molds is its neutral electrical charge. The cell walls of molds have a negative charge. They, therefore, repel the negatively charged water particles in the water contained in pools. The hypochlorous acid, on the other hand, neither being negatively or positively charged, can make contact with the mold’s surface and invade its cells. As a result, the hypochlorous acid is effectively able to bleach the cell walls of mold.
Once hypochlorous acid gets into the mold, it wreaks havoc by chemically reacting with the pathogen proteins. Asa result, the mold loses its complex origami-like structures. The functionality of the proteins of the mold weakens, thus making its cells become dry.

The chlorine in the acid tears apart the mold, shredding its proteins and cell membrane. Importantly, for the hypochlorous acid to effectively kill molds, the pH of the pool water must be maintained within the range between 7.2 and 7.8. This is the range at which the chlorine element is most effective. If the water is too basic, the acid will not form easily, and if the chlorine is too acidic, then people will feel skin and eye irritation.
