THE LOW-FAT DIET MYTH

LBJ, declared the “WAR on POVERTY” in the 1960’s and the medical industry declared the “WAR on DIETARY FAT in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s. The thinking was that dietary fat makes us fat.

Both programs have been MONUMENTAL FAILURES and have contributed to the decline in our social culture, family structure, our health, and has cost America “Tens of Trillions” of dollars with nothing to show for these noble efforts except obesity, debt, societal breakdown, and an out-of-control “disease care system.”

The problem with the low-fat- diet craze is that we took out the omega-3-fats and added refined sugar, lots of it, into the mix. This has become an unmitigated disaster. Even as this is being written, I still see plenty of commercials espousing the merits of the low-fat diet.

 SO, WHAT’S WRONG WITH THE LOW -FAT (HIGH -SUGAR) DIET?

  • Well, for one thing, fat does NOT make you fat, SUGAR DOES!
  • The low -fat diet, however well-intentioned, is loaded with highly refined, non-nutritional sugars, that raise post-prandial (after meal) sugar levels.
  • It’s insulin signaling that causes you to pack on the pounds and that happens when your BLOOD SUGAR remains elevated, why?
  • Because INSULIN is a fat-storage hormone, it signals your cells to store excess SUGAR as triglycerides, which contributes to cardiovascular disease, aging and obesity.
  • High INSULIN LEVELS also cause brain inflammation.
  • It’s the after meal sugar spikes that cause all the retinal, kidney and cardiovascular damage that contributes to our inflammatory health issues.
  • The food manufacturer’s sold us a bag of “toxic goods” as we were told time and again that it’s the calories that matter. Then by dumping a bunch of 0-CALORIE,  HIGHLY NEUROTOXIC  FAKE  SUGAR into their junk products they led us to believe we would  lose weight,  BUT INSTEAD:
  • It’s caused the biggest increase in weight gain the planet has ever seen! Why?
  • Because, calories do not matter nearly as much as INSULIN SIGNALING does when it comes to gaining weight.
  • Low- fat diets are FULL of SUGAR, OBESOGENS and ENDOCRINE DISRUPTORS.
  • Just look at the labels! You can’t even pronounce what’s in all this junk.

Your body has to deal with all of the toxins in this packaged stuff  and it has to rid your body of  the SUGAR, TOXINS, OBESOGENS  and ENDOCRINE DISRUPTORS BY :

  1. DILUTION, of the intracellular fluid to neutralize the toxins in your cells. ie, your cells swell up with water in order to dilute the toxins.

Remember, the solution to pollution is dilution.

  • INCREASING the size and the # of FAT CELLS, called adipocytes.
  • This is called adipogenesis (the growth of fat cells)
  • Raising your INSULIN LEVELS to combat the continual sugar surges.
  • This is REALLY BAD NEWS!
  • This also leads to INSULIN REISTANCE and
  • Fatty liver disease (your liver stores the sugar as fat).
  • PRODUCING ANTIBODIES (allergies) to combat the UNRECOGNIZED TOXINS.
  • The fats that have been removed in the low -fat diets are unfortunately the healthy omega-3 fats that happen to be cardio and neurologically protective.
  • They have been replaced by high inflammatory Omega-6 -vegetable oils.     

This is a very big deal!     

  • Healthy fats are essential for neurological and cardiovascular health.
  • The key is the correct fatty acid ratio, not the elimination of fats altogether. This is measured by the bio-inflammatory AA/EPA Ratio.

  • Long -chain Omega-3- fatty acids are vitally important to prevent fanning the flames of chronic inflammation

To achieve optimal health, you must have balanced adrenal glands. Why, because your adrenal glands are the key to balancing your mineral ratios. This process is the key to body balance and alkalinization. This occurs through the Gluco-Corticoid-Steroid Pathway(GCSP) in a certain portion of the adrenal glands. This is why junk diets cannot help you maintain proper nutrient content. 

The other part of your adrenal function is to synthesize, from cholesterol, steroid sex hormones and to produce some of your stress neurotransmitters. MINERAL LEVELS and their RATIOS are the most important minerals to keep in the proper ratio:

  • Calcium, Ca++
  • Magnesium, Mg++
  • Sodium, Na+
  • Potassium, K+
  • Phosphorous, P+ (Phosphate, PO4+++), increased phosphate levels decrease zinc, calcium and magnesium and upsets the electrolytic balance.
  • Boron, B
  • Molybdenum, Mo
  • Zinc, Zn++
  • Copper, Cu++
  • Selenium
  • Iodine

PROPER MINERAL RATIOS HELP THE REMINERALIZATION PROCESS

  • The Ca++ to P+ ratio needs to be 2.5-1, then, the resorption process stops.  This is most important, andis why an excess of phosphate in soda pop is so bad. The phosphate ion(PO4) in soda pop adds way too much PO4+ into the system.
  • Do not take calcium with iron. When they compete, calcium wins and iron becomes oxidized and damages other important nutrients.
  • Calcium can become bio-unavailable, if this ratio is not achieved.
  • Lead interferes with the body’s ability to use calcium
  • Mercury is an un-coupler and messes up enzymatic balance

TRACE vs. MACRO-MINERALS,   …………….what  you need to know!

  • Healthy Metals Become Displaced by Toxic Heavy Metals!    
  • Minerals are like triggers, as they displace other key minerals.
  • Minerals can displace other minerals, for example: fl- can replace Ca++ in the bone matrix.

SELENIUM AVAILABILITY

  • Is related to environmental toxins
  • Urine is the best medium to test for selenium it’s better than plasma
  • Selenium is anti-neoplastic, or anti-cancer nutrient
  • Iodine and selenium must always be balanced (don’t high dose either one of them)
  • Heavy metals become concentrated over time and concentrate in your brain
  • Selenium decreases double-stranded breaks in cancer genes, thus, it’s cancer protective

Arsenic and mercury both bind to selenium

  • Iodine can solubilize mercury
  • Arsenic is also associated with an increase in  CVD
  • Tea can contain high levels of flouride, nickel and cadmium.  So can coffee.
  • Alcohol also blocks selenium.

WHY ARE NUTRIENT CO-FACTORS IMPORTANT?

  • WAPF: fat soluble vitamins are activators that create the spark. (co-factors)that drive the proper enzymatic reactions that gives you the energy you need to function
  • LOW LEVELS OF STOMACH ACID, decreases protein breakdown and impairs calcium absorption in the gut.

THE COPPER and ZINC ASSOCIATION

  • Copper is a pathogen fighter
  • Zinc is an Age-Buster
  • Low copper also can cause bleeding gums
  • High copper can also contribute to autistic spectrum diseases
  • Thrush; CFS, FM, and Candida can be exacerbated by a disruption in Cu and Zn.
  • If copper is not balanced, you cannot resolve your candida issues
  • Zinc is a copper antagonist,
  • Zinc is blocked by alcohol and coffee.
  • When zinc decreases testosterone converts to estrogen
  • Zinc levels are increased by eating red meats and oysters   
  • Zinc is one of the most important elements in the body.
  • Without zinc, you cannot make stomach acid.
  • Without stomach acid, you cannot digest your food.
  • Without nutrition, your body can’t repair itself.
  •  In addition, without zinc, you cannot make neuro-chemicals like serotonin, dopamine, norepinephrine, and epinephrine.

ESSENTIAL vs. NON-ESSENTIAL MINERALS, AMINO ACIDS AND FATTY ACIDS

Remember that minerals are called “essential” because your body cannot make them. You must take them in on a daily basis.  

The same is true with the essential fatty acids and essential amino acids. Some can be synthesized by your body and some cannot.   

There are 8 essential amino acids, they are:

  1. Leucine
  2. Isoleucine
  3. Lysine
  4. Methionine
  5. Phenylalanine
  6. Threonine
  7. Tryptophan
  8. Valine, and some say histidine.

Non-Essential Nutrients, can be synthesized in your body by putting together, also known as synthesizing, smaller nutrient molecules.

Essential Nutrients, cannot be synthesized by your body and therefore need to be consumed in your diet.  Minerals cannot be synthesized either!!  They must be added to your diet.

THE DENTINAL FLUID TRANSPORT SYSTEM … DFTS

There are miles of microscopic micro-tubular super highways in each one of your teeth called odontoblastic dentinal tubules. These odontoblastic tubules comprise the dentinal fluid transport system (DFTS), which is responsible for carrying enzymes, minerals, amino acids and many more critical substances into and out of your teeth. The way this system operates depends on some very key components and concepts. Let’s take a closer look.

These tubules contain odontoblasts.

The above picture is a microscopic photo of the DFTS’s tubular nature. The photo below shows the positioning of the tubules. These channels are responsible for nourishing your teeth. They also contribute to the sensitivity after a tooth has had a filling or crown procedure. The closer to the pulp you get, the more tubules there are, and the bigger in diameter they become.

This is a highly valuable, necessary, and overlooked system that plays a HUGE ROLE in how your teeth and body function, and whether or not they stay healthy! Can you say, “remineralization vs. demineralization”.

Two researchers have done a tremendous amount of great work on the DFTS, which to this day remains largely ignored. Surprise, surprise. I have written this article in their honor and to awaken the dental and medical world to its importance.

Dentistry has been trying, for years, to figure out why some people get rampant decay and others pay no attention to their oral care or diet, and rarely, if ever experience dental decay.  So, what gives? Turns out there are miles of dentinal tubules inside your teeth connected to the vital pulp. It is a hydraulic-pump system. The function of this DFTS is both extremely complex and vital to proper tooth vitality and remineralization.

SEVERAL KEY CONCEPTS NEED TO BE RECOGNIZED IN UNDERSTANDING THE DFTS

  1. Dentin is living tissue, composed of cells called odontoblasts, dependent on a transport system which is bi-directional, and has no vascular blood supply.
  • Dentin is designed for fluid transport from the pulp to the enamel interface. The enamel is also porous, thus facilitating fluid flow to the outside of the tooth.
  • The DFTS is driven by a hypothalamic-parotid endocrine hormonal exchange.
  • A hydrostatic pressure gradient exists in the system and favors the flow of nutrients from inside of the pulp chamber to the enamel surface on the outside of the tooth.
  • This is a pump-system, with the fluid in the pulp chamber being derived from the blood. The composition of the fluid being pumped through the tubular system is composed of blood, minus the large protein molecules. It’s called DENTAL LYMPH FLUID, and it contains essential nutrients for maintaining the vitality of the dentin.
  • The essential nutrients in the dentinal lymph fluid consists of: glucose for metabolism, amino acids for synthesizing dentinal collagen, and minerals to mineralize dentinal collagen.
  • This whole system is dependent on proper pH. You must maintain consistent acid levels above 5.5. This is why alkaline diets along with alkaline oral health products are so important.
  • This transport system is also dependent on a hormone from the parotid gland called: PAROTID HORMONE. It is signaled by the Pituitary gland
  • IN HEALTHY TEETH: the fluid flow direction is outward toward the enamel surface from the pulpal chamber which is inside the tooth.
  • The hydrostatic pressure within the teeth is higher than in the mouth, and this differential causes the odontoblastic cells to pump fluid from inside the pulp to the enamel surface.

IN UNHEALTHY TEETH, THIS FLUID FLOW IS REVERSED! This is a major league big deal! Why? Because oral fluids can now gain entrance into the dentin through the enamel and cause CARIOGENESIS.  Can you say tooth decay?

 LET’S SUMMARIZE HOW ALL THESE FACTOR’S WORK TOGETHER

THE PAROTID GLAND. This is the major salivary gland on the inside of your cheeks that is responsible for salivary production and the relay signaling from the Hypothalamus.

THE PAROTID HORMONEThis hormone appears to alter the permeability of the odontoblastic cell membrane allowing for the unwanted inward flow of DENTAL LYMPH FLUID into the ODONTOBLASTS. These are the cells that make dentin, sometimes called dentine. Parotid Hormone enters the circulation and activates the DFTS present in the odontoblasts.

 This is key. This dentinal fluid has a great ability to buffer the pH of the fluid at 7.4, and to keep this fluid pH at the same level as the blood.

THE ACIDOGENIC EFFECT OF HIGH-SUGAR DIET ON THE DFTS, when the intra-oral environment is acidic, due to highly -processed sugary diets, it reverses the flow of the DFTS. Sugar suppresses the function of the HPEA, leading to a decrease in PH secretion.

THE HYPOTHALAMIC-FACTOR in THE DENTAL CARIES RELATIONSHIP, a reversal of dentinal fluid (DF) in the tooth allows for the penetration of acids and other hostile substances to enter the tooth structure leading to demineralization. This is bad news!

THE SUCROSE EFFECT. High sucrose diets inhibit the production and flow of saliva, and has been shown to cause atrophy of the parotid glands. This also decreases the alkaline environment, thus favoring tooth decay.

DFTS ACTIVITY AND THE INCIDENCE OF CARIES. The more the fluidity in the system is reversed or slowed down, the more the decay flourishes.

THE HYPOTHALAMIC-PAROTID GLAND ENDOCRINE AXIS (HPEA).  The master gland in your brain responsible for the signaling and relay to the parotid gland to produce Parotid Hormone, called the Hypothalamic-Parotid Exocrine Axis (HPEA)

THE EFFECT OF ENDOGENOUS COMPOUNDS.  Certain compounds like carbamoyl aspartate and carbamoyl phosphate, have a very positive effect on caries inhibition, by 89%.

BIOFILM, BACTERIA, NUTRITIONAL DEFICIENCIES and…. DENTAL DECAY

Dentistry has been trying to figure out, for decades, what causes dental caries, better known

as dental decay. This is the number #1 affliction on the globe and in human populations, worldwide. Gingivitis and periodontal disease are in 2nd place. Each of these conditions

are affected adversely or positively, by bacteria, and bio-film. 

A good example of a well-organized bacterial biomass would be the underside of a boat or barge that has been sitting in the water for many months.

It’s full of rust, barnacles, oxidized slime, mold and nasty parasitic microbes.

The real culprits contributing to dental caries (decay) are as follows:

  1. Bacterial biofilm: aka, plaques, which are slimy, sticky layers composed of a bacterial biomass or film covering the teeth and gums, adhering tightly to these surfaces. These plaques are very hard to penetrate with agents that are alkalinizing.
  2. Acidification of salivary pH: when the bacterial biomass becomes acidic, it favors the destructive bacteria which then begin attacking the enamel, gingival surfaces and bone.

The bigger problem, however, is that dental infections (decay) are acidic and they carry a (+) charge. Minerals also carry a (+) charge and therefore are blocked as the infection repels the entry of the minerals into the areas of the tooth which are infected.  This process is known as DEMINERALIZATION. An alkaline OR HEALING environment carries a negative (-) charge and will therefore accept the minerals, with a (+) charge into the teeth and bone. This is called REMINERALIZATION. This is why Ozone therapy is so effective.

  • An imbalance of mineral content: mineral ratios must be in the correct ratio’s to counteract enamel demineralization of your teeth and bones. This prevents osteoporosis, also.
  • Deficient developmental nutritional substrates: Weston Price had proven years ago, that populations devoid of nutrient substrates had lots of dental crowding and decay issues.
  • The Dentinal Fluid Transport System and Refined Sugary substances: food source for the destructive bacteria and fungus, in your mouth, upper respiratory tract, throat, and sinus areas.  Promotes Candida growth. This affects an internal system known as the Dentinal Fluid Transport System or DFTS.

  • Crowded deficient arch forms and crooked teeth: a crowded arch form, both upper and lower, contributes to poor oral healthcare, mouth-breathing and the retention of bacteria in the hard to clean areas of your mouth.
  • Poor oral health care: if the biomass is not removed on a daily basis, the acid contained in the bio-film establishes itself on the surfaces described above, and begins to organize on the teeth and gum tissues.These 7 points are not in any particular order of importance. In my opinion, #’s 2, 3, and 4 are the most important culprits. You must achieve and then maintain proper mineral ratio’s in order to stop the demineralization of your teeth and gums.

YOUR BABY’S TEETH

As a naturopathic dentist I am often asked: when should I bring my baby in to see you? I am also asked about tooth eruption patterns, arch development, flouride, teething, sealants, dental decay, healthy nutrition and remineralization. How you take care of your baby’s teeth and gums matters. Why? Because, baby or deciduous teeth serve many purposes in the growing child.

Baby teeth are essential:

  • for proper digestive function
  • for proper speech development
  • for proper support of the developing permanent dentition( holding orthodontic  space)
  • for development of self-esteem and social skills development
  • for proper lip support and a positive  lower facial profile
  • for proper nutrition, allowing the gut to absorb food efficiently
  • for correct placement of the mandibular condyles  (jaw growth)

So here are some of my recommendations for you to ponder:

  • Teething: use our “all natural newly developed teething gel” when it is released.  Start brushing at this time also with our soon-to-be-released baby toothpaste. You can also apply cold to the area of babies gums to help alleviate the painful areas.
  • Dental arch development, we monitor facial growth and development very early on ,  starting around the age of three. We correct para-functional habits as soon as they are identified. This includes cross-bites, deficient airways, deficient dental arches, to name a few.
  • Dental decay and remineralization, follow my sheet on remineralization techniques.
  • Eruption patterns, eruption patterns and time of eruption for children can vary enormously, so don’t worry about the timing or sequencing. Look at dental arch size instead.
  • Dental sealants, avoid them! unless ozone is used first. Begin brushing baby’s teeth as soon as they erupt!  Increase your Vitamin D3 to proper levels, normal is: 80-100. Not 32.
  • Never, never, never let any dentist put mercury fillings in your child’s teeth, ever!!!
  • Bring baby into see us as soon as you see the eruption of teeth, lower centralsare thefirst teeth you will see.
  • Healthy nutrition, this is paramount! follow the Dietary Endocrinology Module
  • Flouride: avoid it, it’s not necessary and it disrupts thyroid function by displacing iodine.

Breast feed your baby: there are so many advantages to breast-feeding, they are too numerous to mention in this short article but, let me give you three:

  1. This is necessary to give your precious new-born the needed  probiotic  support  for

WHAT IS OZONE THERAPY and HOW DOES IT WORK?   

BIO-OXIDATIVE THERAPIES IN DENTISTRY

Ozone therapy is referred to as a type of Bio-Oxidative Therapy. Oxygen therapy is not new, just forgotten, until now! In 1857 “The Lancet”, a British Medical Journal published several articles espousing the successful use of medical oxygen. In the 1950’s, German doctors began using ozone to treat cancer. 

Today, we can use ozone for all dental infections to eliminate the infective process and create a condition in your body called, the biological terrain, which favors health over disease.

 Cancer and other diseases simply cannot survive or thrive in an oxygen-rich environment. A highly oxygenated body is immune to disease and destroys already existing disease.

HERE IS THE KEY:

All bugs, bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites, spirochetes,

cannot survive in a high oxygen environment.

 WHY? BECAUSE:

  • Infections in your teeth, periodontal tissue, gums, your failed root canals, bone, and elsewhere in your body are areas that are: devoid of oxygen (this means infections attract anaerobic bacteria which cannot handle an oxidative burst) … keep reading!
  • SO, when you introduce O3 into the site, it kills all of the bugs!!!
  • Infections are areas that have an acidic or positive (+) charge, thereby repelling other positively charged ions, (like minerals). This is why infected areas continue to demineralize as the minerals cannot flow into the infected area because of the charge.
  • When the “biological terrain” is changed in the infected site to an alkaline, negatively charged (-) oxygen- containing environment, not only do the bugs die but the remineralization process begins. It is this negative O3 charge that kills the bad bacteria.
  • Also, since many of the bugs have no antioxidants in their cellular membranes, the ozone creates peroxide molecules which explode the bug membranes…… keep reading!
  • It is the application of Oxygen (O2) with an additional oxygen atom (O3) which makes it highly reactive, thereby causing the creation of peroxide-oxygen molecules called, Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS). A normal cell can handle this peroxide bombardment, to a point, because normal cells contain antioxidants, but bacteria and the like, do not!
  • Another big benefit from ozone is its ability to INCREASE VASCULARITY into the affected area by increasing Nitrous Oxide. This in turn brings more blood flow into the area via the growth and stimulation of new vasculature, called capillaries. This is a really big deal!

Thus, OZONE is the free-radical oxidative burst that destroys the cellular membranes, because the bugs can’t handle the oxygen.  THIS IS VERY GOOD NEWS!

The injections of ozone gas are usually quite painless and take just a few minutes to deliver.  They need to be repeated every 7 to 14 days, depending on the severity of the infection. We now use ozone water for our periodontal program and for the remineralization in very young children.

 In addition, as we flow O3 gas and water over the dentinal tubules in the cavity preparation, we sterilize the tubules and begin the healing process in the area we are treating.

 The ozone destroys the bacteria involved in the decay and infection process, as it cleans and disinfects the area.

Introduction

If your children have been eating the all- American type diet and non-nutritional foods, it actually can be quite simple to eliminate the processed “junk foods” and replace them with healthy foods that help prevent disease. As an example, a glass of water is a much better choice over soft-drinks which can CAUSE WEIGHT GAIN and hasten OSTEOPOROSIS, and the METABOLIC SYNDROME.

It’s also a shame the way children are targeted with foods full of inflammatory fats.

Whole raw milk is actually better for them as it has the ESSENTIAL FATTY ACIDS which promote BRAIN HEALTH.  Yes, I mean stay away from skim milk!

 HERE IS WHERE YOU START:

Eliminate ALL processed foods and sugar.  Sugar is the modern day poison!!! Once eliminated, the sugar cravings will go away in a few months.

Sugar has been associated with many things besides cavities.  It is proven to spike post-prandial blood sugar levels, and cause kidney and cardiovascular damage.

Also, CUT BACK ON CARBS, even fruit.  They contain a lot of fructose so it is wise to not overdue it on fresh and dried fruits, and juices.

STAY AWAY FROM THESE FOODS:

  1. High fructose corn syrup.   High fructose corn syrup is always found in very poor-quality foods that are nutritionally vacuous and filled with all sorts of other disease promoting compounds, fats, salt, chemicals, and even mercury

  8. Processed meats and most deli meats, (hot dogs have really bad fats and sugars!)
  9. Fast food “happy meals”
  10. STAY AWAY from LOW-FAT EVERYTHING, this is actually HIGH SUGAR and is EXTREMELY FATTENING!
  11. Canola Oil.  It is genetically modified and a partially hydrogenated oil

  1. Soda pop soft drinks, concentrated juices, cool aid etc.   Encourage drinking water as much as possible!  Water and raw milk are the best choices for your children.
  2. SKIM MILK, this is a waste product just like fluoride and much more!

  4. Margarine and mayonnaise, avoid this stuff!

REPLACE WITH:

Homemade Granola

  • 4 cups organic old-fashioned oats
  • 1 cup unsweetened coconut flakes
  • 1 cup raisins or craisins
  • 1cup slivered almonds or pecan pieces
  • Mix together and store in tight container
  • Serve with raw milk.  Let it sit for a few minutes to soak.
  • Add honey or small amount of raw sugar if desired

Option is to add honey or molasses to mixture and spread on a cookie sheet.

Bake at 325° for about 20-30 minutes stirring occasionally.

Cool and store.

  • 1 pint fermented chopped cabbage
  • ½ chopped apple
  • ¼ cup sesame seeds
  • 1 or 2 TBS sesame seed oil
  • 1 TBS Maple syrup

THE IMPORTANCE OF MINERALS IN YOUR DIET

A shortage of just one mineral may throw off the balance of bodily activity and may disrupt the entire chain of life, rendering other nutrients either useless or inefficient.

Twelve Points on Minerals:

  1. According to Senate Document No. 264, the official publication, 99 percent of American people are deficient in minerals, and a marked deficiency in any one of the more important minerals actually results in disease.
  • The body is equipped to chelate only a small amount of some inorganic elements from nature.  Therefore, the body requires the minerals to come from plants in a chelated form so that the minerals may be properly assimilated and utilized.  The efficiency of each mineral is enhanced by balanced amounts of the others.
  • The body must maintain an adequate mineral supply to maintain a balance between internal and external pressures of the body cells called osmotic equilibrium.  This state must be maintained for normal cell function and continued youthful health.
  • All nutrients such as: vitamins, proteins, enzymes, amino acids, carbohydrates, fats, sugars, oils, etc., require minerals for activity.  All bodily processes depend upon the action of minerals.
  • Trace chelated minerals are more important in nutrition than vitamins.  Vitamins can be synthesized by living matter, minerals cannot.
  • Vitamins are required for every biochemical activity of the body. 

Vitamins cannot function unless minerals are present.

  • Minerals are the catalysts that make enzyme functions possible.  Chelated minerals combine with enzymes into an alkaline detoxifying agent which neutralizes the acid metabolic by-products of the cells and other toxic conditions within the body and prepare them for elimination.
  • Hormonal secretion of glands is dependent upon mineral stimulation.

STEPS TO ALKALINIZE

 One of the biggest drivers in maintaining a healthy body balance is to achieve the proper Alkaline- Acidic equilibrium in each of your estimated 70 trillion cells. Your body goes to great lengths to achieve an alkaline state. This is also known as homeostasis.  I have summed up several articles for you in other modules, that explain the importance of keeping your blood pH between 7.35 and 7.45. 

How do I do this, you ask?

Here is where you start:

  1. Balance your Oral pH, keep the pH close to 6.5. See Soda Doping below.
  2. Increase your Stomach Acid: by taking Hydrozyme _____from Biotics Research Corp.
  3. Take Iodine, 12.5-25mg, Iodoral which is tableted Lugol’s solution
  4. H2O Alkalinization with ozone or a Vollara water machine.
  5. Eat lots of Vegetables and take probiotics daily. I use I-flora from Sedona Labs
  6. Alkaline fruits, Must be ripe and in season
  7. Mineral Supplements, trace minerals research: Concentrace.                                                                                           Use 21 drops per day with your daily water intake.
  8. Stress Reduction, balance the PSNS, this is the Parasympathetic nervous system.
  9. CR; stands for Caloric Restriction, this prevents FROS, and means…. EAT LESS!!!
  10. The Bohr curve, increases oxygenation in the cells
  11. Limit or Eliminate Medications, all your meds are acidic, work with your Dr. on this one.

THE SAFE SUGAR’S LIST

By all means, please take this with you when you go shopping!!! The list of safe sugars is shorter than the list of unsafe sugars.  Most of these do not appear on ingredient labels because they are not cheap nor do they necessarily extend shelf life.

Nature’s Perfect Sweetener Improves Overall Systemic Health

You’ve often heard the expression, Your eyes are the window to your soul”.  Likewise, we now know that your mouth is the window to your entire body.  That’s why as a Naturopathic Medical Doctor and Doctor of Dentistry, I’ve taken a very serious look at how my patients can best protect themselves against periodontal disease and systemic health issues, especially cardiovascular disease. 

We now recognize the direct connection between inflammatory bacteria in the mouth and systemic disease states, such as cardiovascular disease, periodontal disease, osteoporosis, diabetes and some cancers.

Xylitol Promotes Better Oral Health

Xylitol is a 5-carbon sugar alcohol that naturally occurs in fruits, vegetables and woody plants, like birch. This sugar is very safe in humans.

Xylitol helps to decrease the bacterial load especially with streptococcus mutans and H. pylori, the bacterium primarily responsible for causing dental caries (decay) and gastric ulcers, respectively.

Along with its other known health benefits, regular Xylitol consumption improves periodontal disease by decreasing inflammation. 

The use of Xylitol has shown a reduction in nasal, sinus and oro-pharyngeal infections. It is also effective against h-pylori, (the micro-organism implicated in periodontal disease, bad breath, gastric and duodenal ulcers, and even stomach cancer). 

In the Journal of American Dental Association, studies have shown the use of Xylitol-sweetened gum reduced cavities in children in a dose-dependent manner, [i.e., the more gum chewed the fewer the cavities].  One piece of Xylitol chewing gum contains 3.5 grams of Xylitol and long term studies have shown it to prevent dental caries. DO NOT GIVE XYLITOL TO YOUR PETS, they cannot digest this type of sugar and it could be fatal.

The easiest way to combat these related-health concerns is to introduce Xylitol into one’s dietary protocol.  Substitute Xylitol for any and all sugars that you presently eat or drink. Why? Well, first because this amazing new healthy sugar causes a rapid decline of harmful bacteria in the mouth. 

To start, I recommend a minimum of 12 to 15 grams of Xylitol daily to reduce the acidity and dry mouth issues.  This will decrease dental decay dramatically, upwards of 80%. 

Xylitol Improves Insulin-signaling, Diabetes and Weight Loss

Xylitol is also safe for diabetics and helps with weight loss. Yes, you read that correctly, Xylitol does not cause a significant rise in blood glucose and insulin levels.  This is important for those on an anti-aging regimen, as excess insulin can add 15 years to your biological age. The more table sugar you consume, the higher your insulin levels become. 

Research has shown that excess sugar and insulin are a lethal- combination that causes weight gain [this especially includes diet and non-diet soda’s and high–fructose corn syrup].  Increased insulin- signaling can dramatically increase fat storage in your cells. This increases the inflammatory cycle by increasing the cells [cytokines] that “turn–on” the inflammation process. Xylitol, disrupts this cycle, thereby acting as an anti-inflammatory substance.

Clinically proven effects of Xylitol include:

  • Inhibiting plaque[biofilm] and dental cavities
  • Retarding demineralization of tooth enamel
  • Promoting remineralization of tooth enamel
  • Increasing salivary production                                                               
  • Relieving “dry mouth”
  • Protecting salivary proteins, has a protein-stabilizing effect
  • Improving breath odor
  • Reducing infections in the mouth and nasopharynx
  • Reducing middle ear infections in pediatric patients

Xylitol Improves Bone Health

It gets even better.  Xylitol helps improve osteoporosis and increases bone mineral density (BMD).  In several double- blind studies, Xylitol is showing promising results in raising BMD.  According to figures compiled by the Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, osteoporosis causes some 1.5 million fractures in the United States each year. The cost for treating these fractures is approaching 10 billion dollars annually. Women develop osteoporosis four times more often than men.

Scientists propose that Xylitol’s bone density enhancing properties are due to its ability to promote intestinal absorption of calcium.  They point out that calcium absorption is impaired with aging. [We are in the process of developing osteoporotic nutritional protocol’s and life style modification for this condition, as well as other anti-aging regimen’s].  Although the cost of Xylitol may seem to be more expensive than commercial sugars, it clearly represents a savings due to its many health benefits.  Xylitol does not appear to have a toxic dose. 

People have safely taken up to 400 grams daily without significant ill –effects. High doses, however, have been shown to cause diarrhea, at least initially.   My recommendation is 12 to 15 grams daily (Q.D.). 

I tell my patients that lowering inflammation in your mouth and gum tissue (gingiva) is the key to your oral and systemic health.  Using Xylitol products by replacing commercial sugar with Xylitol will help you to achieve better overall health.                        ~Written by Dr. Thomas J. INSTRUCTIONS for USEAGE of OZONE TRAYS for REMINERALIZATION of TEETH, WHITENING and/or PERIODONTAL TREATMENT

These products also may work well for desensitization

  1. Take ozone oil out of the refrigerator and warm it up to room temperature.
  2. Brush teeth with slurry of baking soda and coconut oil
  3. Use a Sonicare.     
  4.  You may use the MI paste at this step but do not rinse it, floss only, then skip to step #4.
  5. Swish and spit with baking soda for 1 minute, …then floss.
  6. Apply Ozone Oil or Nu-Radiance to the affected area on teeth and gums or apply directly into the periodontal pockets, before placing trays.
  7. Apply ozone oil and /or Nu-Radiance to the affected area inside the trays, upper and lower.
  8. Place trays in for a minimum of 40 minutes, leave all night if possible! Do this 3 times per day.
  9. Take trays out, rinse trays only.  Apply the MI remineralizing gel in your kit to the same areas. Put ozone oil back in the refrigerator after step #1.

Perform this procedure until the ozone oil is depleted. Continue with the rest of the protocol, such as Concentrace mineral application, oil pulling, etc.

HOW TO CLEAN YOUR TEETH, NATURALLY?

As a Naturopathic and Holistic Dentistry clinic, you can imagine we get asked this question a lot. So, we’ve decided to summarize the answer for you and your family. The idea here is to:

  • keep your mouth slightly alkaline, a pH above 6.7 is the best
  • keep your macro and micro-mineral content high,
  • use essential oils in your daily regimen, especially clove, and thieves
  • use ozonated oil and ozonated water! This is a big deal!!!
  • consume a healthy diet. Stay away from ALL REFINED SUGARS!
  • control your oral probiotic content, use streptococcus salivarius k-12
  • and stay away from commercial toothpaste and cleaners that are loaded with crap!

How, you ask, do I accomplish this?

  1. Oil Pulling: See my article on Oil Pulling, it’s very beneficial.
  2. You cannot always brush after you eat but you certainly can rinse your mouth with water and I highly recommend that you do this
  3. Drink water with fresh squeezed lemon juice. See* below
  4. Use a SONICARE toothbrush with baking soda and coconut oil.
  5. If you chew gum or must eat sugar, then use XYLITOL products but use them sparingly! NEVER, EVER DRINK SODA POP: IT’S POISON, plain and simple!
  6. Follow my: 80% ANTI-INFLAMMATORY FOODS LIST.
  7. Use Concentrace Liquimins on a daily basis. I use 21 drops per day

You need to adjust this to bowel tolerance. Especially for your kid’s.

*Remember also, to breathe deeply through your nose while keeping your mouth closed as this limits the drying effect of the air

*Remember also, to keep hydrated, by drinking ½ your body weight in ounces. Just remember to add your trace minerals as well as your macro-minerals

Keep in mind, that what is happening in your teeth is also happening in your bone and skeletal matrix. This is because your blood maintains the homeostatic pH balance by drawing on the minerals in your teeth and bone.

     THE BENEFITS OF RAW MILK

Today’s commercial Holstein cows are bred to produce large amounts of milk. This processed milk contains high levels of growth hormone, engineered bovine growth hormone, and this pushes them to their “udder limits” of milk production. They are mostly fed genetically -modified grains, and they produce 3 times as much milk as old-fashioned cows. They live 42 months compared to about 12 years for grass-fed cows.  Raw milk, by contrast, is very beneficial to your health.

Ultra- pasteurization is a violent process that takes milk from a cool temperature to above the boiling point in just a few seconds and kills every beneficial component in raw milk. Almost all of these components are completely inactivated by pasteurization, making pasteurized milk highly susceptible to contamination.                                                                                                                  ~The Lancet Journal, November 17, 1984

 Homogenized milk has also been linked to heart disease. Worst of all, consumers have been duped into believing that low-fat and skim milk products are good for them. Only by marketing low-fat and skim milk as health foods, can the modern dairy industry get rid of the excess poor quality reduced fat milk from modern high production herds.

 The benefit list for raw milk is very long,

 So, here goes:

  • Type A versus Type B: The devil in the milk
  • Lactoperoxidase: an enzyme that seeks out and destroys bad bacteria. It is found in all mammals secretions such as breast milk, tears, and saliva.
  • Lactoferrin: this enzyme takes away iron from pathogenic bacteria and stimulates the immune system. It ensures complete assimilation of iron by the infant.
  • Polysaccharides: these protect the gut wall and encourage the growth of good bacteria in the G.I. tract.
  • Bio-active milk peptides: works well for insomnia
  • Medium chain  triglycerides: a very favorable type of fat that disrupts cellular walls in pathogenic bacteria
  • Enzymes: which disrupt bacterial cell membrane’s.
  • Antibodies: their purpose is to bind foreign microbes to prevent them from migrating outside the gut. This prevents LGS
  • WB C’s: these produce antibodies against specific bacteria, for the life of the infant
  • B- lymphocytes: cells that kill foreign microbes and send out messages to other parts of the immune system
  • Macrophages: components that engulf foreign proteins in bacteria. These mop up foreign proteins that can cause auto-immunity.
  • Neutrophils: these kill cells that are already infected and mobilize parts of immune system
  • T- lymphocyte: these produce immune strengthening compounds, and multiply when harmful bacteria are present
  • Lysosyme:  these compounds digest bacterial cell walls
  • hormones and growth factors, stimulate the maturation of colonocytes, thereby preventing LGS.
  • Mucins:  these proteins stick to harmful bacteria and viruses thereby preventing these organisms from attaching to the mucosal wall and causing disease. A very useful substance in restoring gut wall integrity.
  • Oligosaccharides: special sugars to protect important compounds from being destroyed by stomach acid and enzymes. These also bind to bacteria and prevent them from sticking to the gut lining
  • Vitamin B12 binding protein: this protein reduces the levels of vitamin B12 in the gut by binding to B- 12.  This renders B- 12 inactive to harmful bacteria which are needed for growth. This protein also ensures complete assimilation of B12 by the infant.
  • Bifidus factor: a complex of beneficial bacteria that promotes the growth of lactobacillum  bifidus, a helpful bacterial component in the babies gut which helps crowd out pathogenic bacteria
  • Glycospingolipids: these prevent intestinal distress
  • CLA, conjugated linoleic acid, which has strong anticancer properties
  • Fibronectin: this helps to repair damaged tissue in the gut by increasing the antimicrobial activity of macrophages

Pasteurization also promotes: colic in infants, increased tooth decay, arthritis, heart disease, osteoporosis, and, behavioral problems in children. Pasteurization was instituted in the 1920s to combat TB, infant diarrhea, undulate fever, and other diseases caused by poor animal nutrition and dirty production methods. Infected water supplies were also a problem. But times have changed and effective water treatment, stainless steel tanks, milking machines, refrigerated trucks and improved testing methods make pasteurization absolutely unnecessary for public protection.

NOTE: Today powdered skim milk, a source of dangerous oxidized cholesterol and neurotoxic amino acids, is added to 1% and 2% milk. Skim milk is a dairy industry waste by-product.

 No one should use skim milk or margarine, EVER!
